And behold, the Lord passed by,
and a great and strong wind tore the mountains
and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord,
but the Lord was not in the wind.
And after the wind an earthquake,
but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
And after the earthquake a fire,
but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak
and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
I Kings 19:11-13
In this story from the life of Elijah, I am reminded of this time when GOD was revealing Himself to him. All those dramatic ways were used, but GOD wasn’t in them…until the quiet whisper came!
How often are you tempted to follow the first noisy thing that comes along! It always seems to get your attention doesn’t it? When was the last time your attention was grabbed by quiet? STOP
This reminder, along with many others in Scripture stops us short!
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10
There is a high value placed on being quiet, being still…and taking time to listen for that quiet whisper from GOD. In today’s world, we have to listen all the more carefully.
The din is louder. The distractions are many more than they were when I was young. It’s amazing that anyone can have a quiet, reflective thought in this day of cell phones and texting, to say nothing of the easy availability of computers, computer games et al!
It is too easy to numb our feelings and thoughts by keeping busy at things that aren’t important…so we don’t have to think about the important things; the difficult issues; the hard problems to face and deal with.
We need to be people who listen to the whisper,
the quiet whisper of GOD!
Are you listening?

Elijah and the story of hearing the still small voice is one of my favorite passages. I agree – turning the noise of the world off has become increasingly more difficult and hearing his voice all the more necessary. May we be blessed with ears to hear. Blessings to you, Martha.
thanks for dropping in pat:) when i saw your whisper post, i knew we were thinking along similar lines:)
