IIpeter134

I’m trying to figure out a way to make our memory time be more reinforced and effective.  So I’m going to use Mondays to reinforce the month’s Scripture.

Some of the time, probably toward the end of the month, I will put up a link for you to share ways you or your family are using the Scripture to put it into practice or learn it well.  Putting it into practice is ideal, but first we have to memorize it.

Of course, you can share on either my facebook page: GrittyGrace.com (all you need to do is like the page and you can add comments there.)  or in the comments here on the weekly posts.

His divine power has granted to us

all things that pertain to life and godliness,

through the knowledge of him

who called us to his own glory and excellence,

by which he has granted to us

his precious and very great promises,

so that through them

you may become partakers of the divine nature,

having escaped from the corruption that is in the world

because of sinful desire.

II Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)

Of course, you may prefer a different version than ESV.  A great resource is Biblegateway.com  They have almost any version you could possibly want in almost any language!  I grew up memorizing King James so this one is easier for me to memorize…and have stick in my brain.  Nothing sticks for me when I memorize it in totally modern English.  I have no idea why.  I just know my self and my often weird and at times feeble brain.

You can print whatever passage you want from Biblegateway.  I have cut them up and stuck them on 4×6 or 5×8 cards to memorize when I walk.  Something else might work better for you.  Don’t be afraid to try different ways to memorize effectively…and share them with us!  Often the goofy ways work surprisingly well so don’t be embarassed to share even ideas that sound a little crazy.

KNOW HOW YOUR BRAIN WORKS BEST TO MEMORIZE

You need to know how your brain works…as well as that of your child.  They may learn differently than you.  Some people learn visually, others are auditory learners  I don’t want to be patronizing, but they learn by hearing what they need to remember.  They often need to hear themselves speak the words they are trying to memorize as well. There are also kinetic learners who need to be moving around and  maybe even talking out loud to memorize.  Take advantage of your learning style as you do your memory work…as you go about your daily routine.

As a generally visual learner, it helps me to see the verse situated as I put it above on the page with 10 phrases.  Then I can work on them a phrase at a time!  Sometimes I put them on cards so they can be portable.  I haven’t figured out all the cool computer/Iphone ways to do it but I’m sure there are many!  Please share them here.  I’d be glad for help in these areas.

So figure out the way you and your loved ones learn best and do it.  For reinforcement of what you are learning here are areas to share with us:

  • discuss ways to put the truths into practice,
  • how they apply to specific situations as they arise,
  • what the words actually mean vs. what I’d like them to mean or what I think they mean.

Don’t give yourself excuses NOT to memorize.  There are many excuses we can use.  There may be times you could give grace to your kids, but don’t be as free to let yourself off the hook.  Our natural tendency is to be hard on our kids and be easier on ourselves…I don’t think I’m the only one who naturally falls into that group.

I’m a Pharisee by nature.  Of course, that will be my natural inclination!  I tell you this because it helps you understand my natural tendensies.  I know the correctives I need.  I need to constantly be reminded that on my own, I don’t have it in me to do naturally purely good things.

At the same time, I want to be genuine as I live my life, especially in my home.  My example speaks much more powerfully to my family than my words.  That means, not requiring something of them that I don’t demand of myself.  It may also mean honestly espressing to my kids that I have struggles to do the right thing at times just like they do.  I would hate for them to grow up thinking I never struggle there.  It only makes sense.

So on that note, we’ll meet again next week.

And remember, GOD’s divine power has given you all need for life and Godliness!  Is that an encouraging promise or what?

Unpack the meaning of that in this text as you walk through this week..and hide it in your heart!
