Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.
Refrain:
Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.
Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.
Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.
Thou the spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee,
Whom in Heav’n but Thee.by Fanny Crosby
When the prompt “pass” popped up tonight, this hymn immediately came to mind. As I thought through the words in my head, I realized I had something to write about for sure!
During times of humbling and weakness, what better prayer than to ask GOD, “Don’t pass me by.” “I see you working all around me. I bow before you and ask you… please, don’t pass me by.” stop
Obviously, He won’t pass His children by. He has so much invested in us, to say nothing of the fact that He is a covenant keeping GOD. He promised in the Old Testament to keep the covenant He made with His people. In the New Testament, He spilled His own blood for us on the cross to pay for our sin and earlier, He promised:
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish,
and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,
and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
John 10:27-29
But we can never take it for granted. We need to humbly bow before the holy, majestic GOD of the universe. We need to see who we are in reference to Him. And find mercy as we admit our need before Him…only finding merit and healing in Him.
What a treasure we have in the One who has not passed us by…and won’t pass us by as we come humbly to Him.
Do you remember your place…in reference to the GOD of the Universe? How encouraging that He hasn’t passed us by.
I’m so glad he doesn’t pass us by and that we can always take shelter with him with the storms of life rise up.
amen anita:)
I did not get around to writing a Five Minute Friday post but I did think about the word. Would you believe the first thing that came to my mind was that song you shared? 🙂 It’s beautiful, and I like how Fernando Ortega sings it. So wonderful that God did not pass us by! Blessings to you1
i love his arrangement too gayl:) i tried to find it on youtube to link it here, but had trouble.
Never take for granted that which is surely ours. That is the take-away for me in your post. I always enjoy reading your word.
thanks gabriele:) i think that is a good take away.
What a treasure indeed! And you know what I’ve seen as I’ve prayed for Him to reveal Himself to me in my need: He always simultaneously meets another one of His children’s needs in answering my prayer: a God who in our breaking multiplies His blessings. Yes, bow the knee we should: how great is our God?!
anna, i think that is often the way GOD works. He doesn’t want us getting so focused in our ourselves and our needs i guess:) one area of gift i have is encouraging. inevitably, when i am down, He sends me someone(s) to encourage…in a healthy, Biblical way…forcing me into His word. it helps me too. always. and gets me out of my head!
Oh how I recognize that, Martha! Encouragement is one of mine too. And this is also how He encourages me (which is partly what my FMF post is about!).
Amen! We took a very similar approach to this word prompt! How thankful, and how much do we love, that He never passes us by! Love this!
so true kerrilee:) his amazing grace is unbelievable! but the fact that He sticks with us through our thickness and thinness is astounding.
He never has!
what a great hope!
That is a beautiful hymn. I’ve never heard it before but yours is the second FMF post it has featured in! It is encouraging that God doesn’t pass us by and it is important not to take it for granted but to remember how amazing it is.
interesting Carly, that this was a new hymn to you all. see my note to tara. i wrote a little more about it. i have also written about this hymn and author before. that’s why i couldn’t title this post with the title of the hymn. the link is below my post in one of those 5 links and tells about the author and the hymn. i think it has a video of someone singing it too.
Powerful hymn – I love the words, “wounded,” “broken,” “contrite,” when they are matched with the words “spring of comfort,” and “sweet relief.”
Inspired and powerful words you wrote: “I see you working all around me. I bow before you and ask you… please, don’t pass me by.” “We need to humbly bow before the holy, majestic GOD of the universe. . . . And find mercy as we admit our need before Him… only finding merit and healing in Him.”
This post fills me with praise and worship.
Love you, dear sister of my Savior!
thanks kay:) i was renewed as i read those powerful words by fanny crosby once again! that’s what i love about 5 minute Friday:) those words bring up all kinds of interesting thoughts and memories i would never think to write about:)
So much THIS: “Obviously, He won’t pass His children by. He has so much invested in us, to say nothing of the fact that He is a covenant keeping GOD. He promised in the Old Testament to keep the covenant He made with His people. In the New Testament, He spilled His own blood for us on the cross to pay for our sin.” I don’t think I know this hymn you shared.
I’m happy to introduce it to you tara:) it’s an oldish one. not like the centuries old ones, but old just the same. google the author, Fanny J Crosby…great story! she was blinded at about age 3 after an accident with an awl. i don’t think it was the actual accident that blinded her as much as the infection after if i recall. she wrote many hymns over her lifetime. sometimes, i’m just as inspired by the stories of the authors of hymns as i am by the hymns themselves. i did a series on hymns and the stories of their authors for a few years…but had a lot less readers then!
I am SO very thankful that he doesn’t pass by me! So comforting to know that even when I do sin and fail, He is faithful to forgive when I humble myself and repent. God certainly gifted Fanny Crosby didn’t he?
yes, Christy:) she wrote so many great hymns! i love how GOD sticks with us even when we sin…loving us and “hounding” us in a loving way until we return to Him in repentance again.
Amen! I love that hymn. Beautiful introduction to the devotion.
Thank you for drawing our hearts closer to His Throne of Glory.
God Bless, Martha
thanks so much ifeoma. i’m glad it had that effect:)
That hymn popped into my head as well! So good to know that He will never pass us by!
Happy Friday, your FMF neighbor.
it is katha:) hope all is well in your part of the world.
