This is our final Sunday in our 31 day series. I’m passing on this song by Fernando Ortega. It is singable but I learned it is an old hymn and tune…very old.

This is one more reminder of the Gospel. What did Jesus do for us on the cross? It spells it out in more detail. What a priceless gift!

Today, I’ll encourage you to think about this incredible gift Jesus gave us. Yes, it isn’t pretty to think about. But it is also an amazing gift that we did nothing to earn on our own!

He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:3-6 ESV

Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted
Words by John Kelly
Tune by F.H. Barthelemon

Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted
See him dying on the tree
Tis’ the Christ by man rejected
Yes my soul tis heat is He
Tis the long Expected prophet
David’s Son yet David’s Lord
By His Son God has now spoken
Tis the true and faithful Word
Tell me ye who hear him groaning
Was there ever grief like his
Friends through fear, his cause disowning
Foes insulting his distress
Many hands were raised to wound Him
None would enter posed to save
Yet the deepest stroke that pierced Him
Was the stroke that justice gave
Ye who think of sin but lightly
Nor suppose the evil great
Here may view its nature rightly
Here its guilt may estimate
Mark the Sacrifice Appointed
See who bears the awful load
Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed
Son of Man and Son of God
Here we have a firm foundation
Here the refuge of the lost
Christ the Rock of our Salvation
Is the name on which we boast
Lamb of God for sinners wounded
Sacrificed to cancel guilt
None shall ever be confounded
Who on Him their hope have built
