GOD’s Word is definitely a wonderful source of encouragement. It encourages us is by reminding us who GOD is as well as reminding us of His promises. The Bible encourages us in other ways too. As we read the historical portions, we see how he worked through all kinds of events in history and brought about His purposes, but it was on His timing. The promise of Messiah was hundreds of years after He was promised…and He was nothing like what they were expecting!!

GOD’s Word is made up of a variety of genres. Each speaks to different people at different times of need. Yes, the whole Bible is inspired by GOD, but there are times when something like the Psalms touches you more than something from I Chronicles. It is all important and all inspired by GOD, but there is a good reason GOD made it up in different genres. They include poetry, history, direct teaching and prophecy. But one passage that is reinforced by the music of the Psalms is found both in Colossians and Ephesians. i’ll quote the Colossians passage here:

 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16 ESV

So we can give and receive encouragement through the singing of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. They are not on a par with the Bible, in terms of being inspired by GOD, but are often using words of Scripture or using modern versions of the Bible…or praying back to GOD. Today’s song is repeating truth that is taught is the Bible.

…….

1 My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain:
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.

2 When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in ev’ry high and stormy gale
my anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain]

3 His oath, his covenant, his blood
support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain]

4 When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found,
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain]
