Blue,
the color.
it is full of meaning.
many concepts came to mind
when i heard this prompt tonight.
blue sky, the blue waters of the ocean
both so vast.
i grew up in south Florida
we often went to the beach to swim.
sometimes it was hard to tell where one started
and the other ended.
during the ’70’s, my husband and i lived in Jamaica.
again, we frequently found ways to get it to the beach
even though we lived in the mountains.
the blue-green color of the caribbean waters
are rarely far from my memory.

there is also the association with royalty…royal blue
the military…navy blue, as well as a classic color and style.
shades of azure, turquoise and cerulean sound more poetic
and brighten the palette
but they are blue just the same.
all those years in Texas taught me to love denim
the color as well as the fabric. it is a workhorse! stop
it endures forever.
and even after all those washings,
it still has that faded look that we love.
finally, there are “the blues.”
both the music and the feelings.
i have come to appreciate blues music.
it seems to express the reality of life in a broken world.
and i can move and sway and lose myself
in the funky beat of the music.
the blues that are the feelings
are another story.
they aren’t as fun.
they come on me like a black cloud.
i can be minding my own business
and the blues will settle over me…
uninvited and unwanted.
voices from the past
speak out with their loud condemning words.

But in the middle of those blues
Jesus speaks His truth through the apostle Paul:

**Be sure to check out the
FMF link that gives updates
on the August FMF Retreat coming
up.
It will be small, intimate,
reasonably priced and useful to
you.
I’m going and am excited to meet
others of you who write at FMF.
Come join us!
It will be in the Nashville area.
I love Jamaica! My husband lived there as a kid, and we were able to visit when our girls were 12 and 14. What a beautiful, blue-filled island. For me, blue is the color of comfort :)–maybe because each time I feel blue, I end up noticing so many shades of blue and I feel energized and comforted by the beauty of my Savior’s creation! Thank you for linking up at #InspireMeMonday!
how cool that he lived in JA anita! what part? we lived in mandeville. (in the middle of the island, mountains…not the blue mountains where they make the coffee. at the time we lived there, it was near one of the areas where they mined bauxite (aluminum) which they no longer mine. we were there 1971 (jan) -may1977. loved it…once i took off my watch for 1 1/2 years:)
They lived in Mandeville, too! His dad worked at a college there.
really? my husband taught at jamaica bible college. which college did his dad teach at?
Martha, I love the color blue! These are great reminders of the many things I love that come in blue. Even the blue emotions are necessary some days, right? Looking forward to seeing you in August.
me too. i never seem to be able to get to the parties so it will be fun to meet in person. yes holly, as much as i would like to go through life laughing all the time, it would definitely not be a good idea! lament is part of life too, a very real part!
Amen – such a great way to put the not-so-happy-blues in their place – remembering that Jesus speaks life over us and that His banner is grace. Blessed to stop by from #fmf.
thanks for stopping by tiffany. obviously it doesn’t solve every aspect of the blues, but it does help when i realize HE is not the one condemning me! just as with the adulterous woman…his words to her were…neither do i condemn you, go and sin no more.
it’s not b/c he winks at sin, but b/c he paid for the sin at the cross. he is the sinless one who, in contrast to the pharisees who were only too ready to judge her, is willing to forgive b/c he was going to pay for that sin with His death.
What a wonderful reminder this verse is! Love reading the path your thoughts took for the writing prompt, Blue. Especially, your ocean memories. We just returned from Hatteras and I’m missing the ocean. I’ve been to Hatteras twice in my life and I love it.
My friend married a man from Jamaica and her pictures of visiting there are so gorgeous.
Stopping by from FMF.
i’m glad you stopped by deborah:) jamaica was a beautiful place. we lived more in the middle of the island about 2000 feet up so the weather was fairly consistent at 70 most of the time. no a/c was needed. it was beautiful and a great place to learn to garden…which i did…in between having babies that is:)
Hey man that! I’m following you at fmf today and I will see you at the retreat too! Should be lots of fun!
Love your random blue thoughts. Especially Florida oceans. Remember going to Miami Beach with my Grandma many years ago. Breakfast trips were the best.
Have a wonderful Friday!

glad you stopped by christy. i look forward to meeting you:) i deleted your extra comment and kept the one that had the most in it. nice that you have happy Miami Beach memories. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, but we also lived in Hollywood, worked in Morth Miami Beach and Mmiami Beach and later lived way down in Cutler Ridge which is in south south Miami. I did some home health nursing in Miami Beach…drove past the cruise ships on my way. it was beautiful!
