And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain-
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?Chorus:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?He left His Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite His grace-
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray-
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.by Charles Wesley
Yes, another hymn by Charles Wesley! This one was written right after he was born again, or at least came to a place of firm assurance of his salvation based on GOD’s Word. It happened at Aldersgate. There is no question he had a strong foundation for faith by growing up in a godly home. He was also tender toward Christ and had already traveled to the U.S. to minister to the Indians there.
He just didn’t have confidence that he would be with Christ in the end. As you read the words to this song, you know he has that confidence now! Below is a link to a post on the Gospel Coalition that gives all the Biblical references and their connection to this song. It is very encouraging!
Singing this song is a wonderful review of the gospel and a reminder of the grace GOD has shown us! Enjoy reacquainting yourself with this song…or learning it for the first time if it is new to you!
See this link for the details on the Scriptures behind the words of this hymn.
