Why would I say that knowing the one true GOD will help you grow up? Is that a far out statement? No, it isn’t. I’ll tell you why.
If we know the true GOD as revealed in the Bible, we will be put in our place. We are not in charge of our own destinies.
For some of us, that is a huge relief. For others of us, our arrogance won’t allow us to consider this fact because we are the center of our own universe. We hate to think of losing control of our lives and our choices…or surrendering them to someone else. We don’t like to stop to think about the fact that there is someone bigger and grander than we are…unless our world starts falling apart!
Either way, the truth of who GOD is will be good for us to know, not as a piece of information to add to a lot of facts floating around in our heads, but it is important for us to know in our gut…in the deepest places of our hearts. At the very core of ourselves where we deal with our doubts and fear. That is the place we need to be assured of the one true GOD…and who He is. Reams have been written about Him. I don’t have any illusions that I will be able to concisely write the right words here that will capture who He is, I’m no where near that great a writer…and the topic is too broad!
Fortunately, there have been many who have already written summaries taken from Scripture and I will use one of those summaries below. It is included here for your thinking and meditation. It was written hundreds of years ago and included in the Westminster Shorter Catechism. The question is What is GOD? The following is the answer:
God is a Spirit,
infinite, eternal, and unchangeable,
in his being,
wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.
I will link you to this post that is more detailed and includes the Scripture to back up each of these attributes. I’m sorry I couldn’t link every passage because my post couldn’t handle all those links!
GOD is enormous, we are teeny tiny.
Is there anything more humbling than to realize than this?
Is there anything that can give us more security than to know we belong to HIM…if we are “in Christ.”
ChangePoint:
Do you know this GOD? How have you experienced His grace in your life recently? in the past? As part of the growing up process, have you come to realize His hugeness compared to your smallness? It is humbling and that can help a person grow up to realize who they are compared to GOD.
Whoops! I went to link to the Sunday Community and discovered that Diedre decided to do her own 31 day series…31 days of OFF:) so i didn’t get to link here after all today.
